ERASURES: ON MEMORY AND FORGETTING
(Memory Trace, Desert Bloom, Al-'Araqib)

Erasures: On Memory and Forgetting takes its point of departure from Fazal Sheikh’s Memory Trace and Desert Bloom, the first and second volumes of his three-volume photographic project on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Published in the spring of 2015, The Erasure Trilogy seeks to explore the legacies of the War of 1948, which resulted in the dispossession and displacement of three quarters of the Palestinian population, in the establishment of the State of Israel, and in the reconfiguration of territorial borders across the region.

Elements of these volumes have been exhibited at the Slought Foundation in Philadelphia, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Pace/MacGill Gallery in New York, and are now presented at the Al-Ma’mal Foundation for Contemporary Art in East Jerusalem, and the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah. In addition, historical documents and materials related to the history of Al-’Araqīb, a Bedouin village that has been destroyed and rebuilt more than one hundred times in the ongoing “battle over the Negev” will be shown at Al-Ma’mal. Together, this decentralized network of institutions, each functioning in different arenas and with different mandates, collectively seeks to generate conversation across different sites, contexts, and communities about the politics of dispossession and displacement.

ينطلق العمل «محو: عن الذّاكرة والنّسيان» من «أثر ذاكرة» و«إزهار صحراويّ»، وهما العددان الأوّل والثّاني من مشروعه التّصويريّ ثلاثيّ الأعداد حول الصّراع الإسرائيليّ الفلسطينيّ. نُشرت الثّلاثيّة لأوّل مرّة في ربيع 2015، وتسعى إلى تتبُّع إرث حرب عام 1948 بين إسرائيل والمملكات العربيّة، الحرب الّتي نجم عنها تشريد وتجريد ثلث سكّان فلسطين من أراضيهم، إقامة دولة إسرائيل، وإعادة تشكيل الحدود الإقليميّة في المنطقة.

عُرضت مقتطفات من هذه الأعداد في كلّ من مؤسسة سْلُوْت (Slought Foundation) في فيلاديلفيا، ستورفرونت (Storefront) للفنّ والعمارة، متحف بروكلين للفنون، وغاليري بايس/ماكغيل (Pace/MacGill) في نيويورك، وتعرض حاليًّا في مؤسسة المعمل للفنّ المعاصر في القدس الشرقيّة وفي مركز خليل السّكاكيني في رام الله. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، ومن ضمن العمل، ستُعرض في مؤسّسة المعمل وثائق تاريخيّة ومواد تتطرّق إلى تاريخ قرية العراقيب، وهي قرية بدويّة تعرّضت للهدم أكثر من مئة مرّة ويقوم أهلها بإعمارها من جديد في كلّ مرّة وهذا من ضمن "المعركة المستمرّة على النّقب". تسعى هذه الشّبكة اللّامركزيّة من المعاهد، الّتي تعمل في حقول مختلفة واختصاصات متنوّعة، بشكل جماعيّ إلى إثارة نقاش حول سياسة التّشريد والتّجريد في مواقع عديدة وسياقات ومجتمعات مختلفة.

On the occasion of the opening of Erasures: On Memory and Forgetting, Al Ma’mal will host a discussion that explores the work on display. Participants include: Eduardo Cadava, Aaron Levy, Tamer Nafar, Jack Persekian, and Fazal Sheikh. This discussion will run from 18:30 – 20:00 and will be followed by a performance by DAM at 20:30 at the Al Ma’mal rooftop.

Exhibition closes Friday 23rd September 2016.

أن يستضيف نقاشًا يدور حول العمل المعروض. المشاركون: إدواردو كاداڤا، آرون ليڤي، تامر نفّار، جاك برزخيان وفضل شيخ.
يبدأ النّقاش في تمام السّادسة والنّصف (١٨:٣٠) ويستمرّ حتّى الثّامنة (٢٠:٠٠)،
يلي النّقاش في الثّامنة والنّصف (٢٠:٣٠) عرض موسيقيّ لفرقة دام على سطح المعمل.

يستمرّ المعرض حتّى يوم الجمعة ٢٣ أيلول ٢٠١٦.
